Research opportunities

Information on former Jewish citizens of the city of Aschaffenburg can be found in many ways.

  • Archive

The city and abbey archives hold a large number of personal records: registration cards of the municipal administration, the civil registry of the registry office with the entries on births, marriages and deaths. The archive has a reading room where papers and documents can be consulted. An internal archive database provides further information on holdings and collections.

  • Database

The biographical database “Jewish Life in Lower Franconia” („Jüdisches Leben in Unterfranken“) combines and links all relevant information from archived documents that exist on a person. Other databases and Internet sources are also linked and can be viewed directly online. Additional functions allow the display of family trees revealing family relationships, but also places of residence or business connections can be researched. The database is continuously being complemented and expanded by volunteers.

  • Museum

For the Museum of Jewish History and Culture, a collection of objects is continuously being built up, focusing not only on the religious life of the former Jewish community, but also on the business community and private family life.
